Nine Steps You Should Be Taking To Hold & Retain Moisture In Your Hair!

Moisture is always a challenge for those of us with curly hair.  If you've attended one of our Q&A sessions, you'll notice that this topic is of recurring interest to many and based on our discussions, I've summarized some of the key tips and tricks to help you get and retain more moisture in your natural hair so that it is softer, bouncier and easier to manage.

  1. This one seems obvious but really think about how many glasses of water you actually get per day.  Is it 2?  5?  8?  If it's the latter, then you're doing great.  If it's 2 or 1 or zero then your hair will feel the effect of it.  Infuse your water with lemon, lime, ginger or cucumber to enjoy the experience.
  2. If you're in a cold or hot and dry region, get a hygrometer to measure the amount of moisture in the air.  It will tell you when the air is dry so that you can use a humidifier to add moisture.  Your hair, skin, eyes, throat etc. will thank you.
  3. Take vitamin E capsules.  It is an antioxidant and improves the health of your skin and hair.
  4. Incorporate more omega 3 fatty acids into your diet by eating fruits like avocados, seeds like Chia seeds and fish like salmon.  The oils from these help nourish and moisturize the scalp and hair.
  5. Wear a silk or satin cap to ensure you are not loosing moisture.
  6. Purchase fresh aloe vera from the grocery store, extract the gel, mix it with distilled water and use it directly on your hair.  It will soften and nourish your hair while delivering a plethora of nutrients that your hair will love.
  7. Rehydrate your hair with a good moisturizer that contains a humectant like glycerin.  Refresh your hair every day if you need to during the winter months because the air outside or inside doesn't hold moisture.  The Naturaz Rehydrating Mist & Detangler will rehydrate and keep your curls soft for longer.
  8. Avoid shampoos that produce a lot of suds or that foam a lot.  A lot of foam carries away oils and dries out your hair.  If you don't have a non-foaming shampoo try the Naturaz 3-In-1 Conditioning Shampoo that contains aloe vera, humectants, emolients, jojoba oil, lavender essential oil that will cleanse, moisturize and condition your hair.
  9. Try a DIY deep conditioning mask using fresh ingredients from home like egg or mayonnaise, avocado, extra virgin olive oil, honey, aloe vera gel etc.  Try combining different ingredients and see what your hair likes most.  Here is one DIY recipe that you can try out.  Let me know how it works out for you!

To boost moisture retention in your hair, use  the Naturaz aloe vera based Rehydrating Mist & Detangler as often as you need to refresh your strands and help your hair attract and hold moisture.
